WhatsApp is testing disappearing messages for iPhone users, and this new feature feels far more personal and privacy-focused than the current timed options. Instead of messages disappearing after a fixed countdown from when they are sent, WhatsApp is currently testing an “After Reading” timer system that only starts when the message is actually opened.
This feature is currently present in the latest beta versions of WhatsApp for iOS through Apple’s TestFlight program, which provides early testers with an insight into what may evolve into one of the app’s biggest privacy upgrades in years.
Messages That Expire After They’re Seen
The upcoming system introduces three new disappearing message durations:
- 5 minutes after opening
- 1 hour after opening
- 12 hours after opening
This creates a more natural private messaging experience because the countdown begins only after the recipient has viewed the message. It solves one of the biggest frustrations with traditional disappearing chats, where messages might expire before someone even has the chance to read them.
WhatsApp is also adding a smart safety layer for ignored messages. If a message is never opened, the app will automatically remove it 24 hours after it was sent. That means unread private messages won’t stay floating forever in chats.
A Smarter Dual-Timer Privacy System
One of the most interesting parts of this feature is the way WhatsApp handles deletion across devices. Instead of relying on a single universal timer, the app reportedly runs independent countdowns for both the sender and the receiver.
For the sender, the timer starts immediately after the message is sent. On the receiver side, the timer begins only when the message is opened. This dual-device approach could make disappearing chats feel more reliable while also reducing sync issues between devices.
The system appears designed to balance privacy with practicality. Users gain better control over sensitive conversations without worrying that important messages will disappear before they’re actually viewed.

It will appear alongside WhatsApp’s existing disappearing message choices, including:
- 24 hours
- 7 days
- 90 days
The latest feature is presently being deployed to beta testers utilizing WhatsApp for iOS version 26.19.10.72 and later via Apple’s TestFlight platform.
